India’s solar-powered airport is a star

The world’s first airport to be completely powered by solar energy has just won a top environmental award.

Cochin International Airport, the fourth busiest in India, switched to solar power in 2015. Last week it received a 'Champions of the Earth' award from the UN which says the airport is showing that the world’s ever-expanding network of global movement doesn't have to harm the environment.

“As the pace of society continues to increase, the world's first fully solar-powered airport is proof positive that green business is good business," says a release by United Nations Environment Programme.

The airport is powered by more than 46,000 solar panels which also supply surplus energy to the grid.

The maintenance and upkeep of the solar panels have also triggered more green ideas. Over the past year, the airport has been busy farming organic vegetables on the land where the panels are installed.
