Solar panels - harnessing the clean energy of the sun

Solar panels are transforming the global energy industry as they can generate cleaner, and often cheaper, electricity compared to fossil fuels.

At first glance there's not a lot to a solar panel and that's one of the advantages. As there are no moving parts there's not much that can go wrong, plus they're built to withstand nearly everything the weather can throw at them. Look more closely and you'll see they're made up of a series of cells. Today's cells are the result of decades of development which have made them more efficient and cheaper to produce. The cells rely on the photovoltaic effect to convert the sun's energy to electricity. This animated visualisation shows how solar panels work.

So it can be used in your home the electricity generated by the solar panels is then converted from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) by a device called an inverter.

When assessing your home for solar we work closely with you to size a system that is going to meet your normal daytime energy needs. An average sized residential system uses 10 panels which take up about 16 square metres of space on your roof.

As solar panels are harnessing the clean energy of the sun it's important to us that they're produced with sustainability in mind. Solar panels are made predominantly from silicon dioxide which is a natural compound found all over the planet, including in sand. Our solar panels have a 1-2 year energy payback before they will have generated the same amount of energy that went into producing them. This means that over its 20-year lifetime each solar panel will pay back its energy debt by more than 10 times.

For many Kiwis the upfront cost of buying solar panels has stopped them going solar. Now, with our solarZero energy service, you can buy clean, affordable solar energy, generated on your roof by solar panels which we own and manage. You simply pay a low fixed monthly fee for energy services providing inflation-free solar power that could save thousands of dollars on power bills over the long term.
